We attended a performance of the Oregon Symphony Orchestra at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall at SW Broadway and SW Main Street this evening. Carlos Kalmar conducted, with Garrick Ohlsson at the piano. Three selections were promised and delivered magnificently, Haydn’s opera overture to Orfeo and Euridice, Mozart’s Concerto No. 9 in E-flat major for orchestra and piano, and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5. Garrick Ohlsson graced the audience with an encore solo performance of Chopin’s Waltz Opus 18.
Our third row and slightly to the left of center seats were perfect, especially for viewing Ohlsson’s dance of the piano keys. Conductor Carlos Kalmar gave a lively performance, often adding the sounds of his bouncing feet against the stage floor as he led the orchestra.
Mayor Sam Adams, by the way, was in whispering distance, seated just before us in the second row, immediately to our left.
The short walk to the concert hall for a perfect evening and a perfect performance is what condo living in a vibrant downtown is all about.

It was indeed a magnificent evening and the orchestra was in top form.
I could be wrong, but I think Sam particularly enjoyed the Shostakovich.
The Shostakovch was my favorite, too. However, I was just enthralled with the conductor. So much energy and passion and joy all wrapped up in one adorable package.
Should I be worried?
Hmm. Let’s see. He works downtown, I live downtown, and I think he is adorable. Our paths could cross…
