There was quite the commotion not far from our door this evening. Voices were heard coming and going. There was much more activity than normal. At one point, I peeked out into the hallway and observed two men talking together. I did not think more of it.
But the voices and the movement were increasing. Soon there were sounds of equipment. First it was the sounds of metal tools clanking. Then there was drilling and I do not even know what else. Perhaps somebody was involved in a home improvement project of some sort, but at nighttime?
Inquiring minds want to know. So I stepped out into the hall and quickly observed that the hallway had been partitioned off by a floor-to-ceiling and wall-to-wall translucent vinyl curtain. The event was now out of clear view. Undaunted, I proceeded to the activity.
Through the obscuring curtain I could roughly make out the images of two men crouched together on the floor. They were talking as they toiled but stopped to graciously answer my questions. I was told that at about 4 o’clock today they received an emergency call about a water leak that was observed coming from the garage ceiling just below. They were drilling into the joist and floorboard in search of a pool of water.
Although I did not see a divining rod, it was water that they sought. Like so many dowsers before them, they came up dry.
